New rules for online shops, known as the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard, mean that from 30 June your bank could simply demand full compensation for all of their losses – potentially running into millions - if customer data is compromised on your website.

This applies to all card providers worldwide and could affect you if you have your own merchant account and operate a store or payment gateway on your site.

More details at Web security Part 1: How safe is your site? (Requires free registration.) There are links in the comments below the article to sources of information on the new rules and requirements. Most banks should have a page on this.

You can also access the new PCI Data Security Standards as PDFs via the MasterCard International site at this link.
