Google may be having another poke around under the hood, because PageRank™ was noticeable by its absence from my toolbar when I wanted to asses some potential link partners. SE Roundtable said yesterday that “It’s been about 24 hours and the Google Toolbar is still grayed out for all sites.”
It’s probably too early to speculate over whether this is a temporary or permanent situation - being Sunday, I have only made a cursory search of SEO related blogs and there’s unlikely to be much news on the weekend anyway.
Obviously, PageRank™ is the heart of Google’s technology, but it is possible they might decide to remove the ability for the public to see a representation of it. That would certainly save many webmasters a lot of time.
UPDATE May 30: I’m glad to report that my PageRank is all better now, at the same levels as I’d had before, as I am sure yours will be too.
This is the second time recently that Google have been *playing* and the ranks disappeared … and both times have been on the WEEKEND. I can’t remember offhand about any previous updates, but it’s probably worth consigning that little fact to memory someplace to offset future panics.
Guessing their logic that a weekend meddle will be less disruptive, unfortunately, it means there is little chance of any official or hard news and considerably more pure speculation from the rest of us.
