Neatly following on from the last post, as we mentioned, one issue when people add your feed to their feed reader or page like their MyYahoo page is that your feed content essentially becomes part of that page in readers’ minds.
However, there is a way in which you can help differentiate yourself and maintain a visual link between the portion of content that is yours and your site. With a favicon icon.
I am sure you are already familiar with these in their role of showing up in the browser address bar or in someone’s list of bookmarks or favorites after they have bookmarked you, but these icons are now showing up in actual web pages all over the place - related to your RSS feed.
Inside my Bloglines account, for instance, there are numerous of these icons which show up next to their related feed titles.
And, as you can see, sites which do not have a favicon icon set up, are missing an opportunity here with a generic icon next to their feed.
The same is now happening on the MyYahoo page, where these icons are shown to the left of each feed title, as they are on many similar pages and services across the net.
It is another important reason why you need a favicon icon and, if you haven’t yet bothered to make one, I suggest you do so, pronto. If you go to my Furl archive and type “favicon” into the search box, you’ll get a list of online generators you can use to make your favicon icon, plus related explanations of what you need to do with it.
