Really, in my experience, the cats choose us, not the other way around. I have often suspected them of having their own species of wireless internet, because, no matter where I go in the world, stray cats seem to be able to beat a path to my door.
Daft they are not. They know a born sucker when they see one!
There is good advice in this article, but I have to say that if I had rejected all the animals that attempt to scratch, bite or hiss at me, or were in a less than perfect states of health, then I would probably never have taken in any cats at all.
One or two have been so timid and defensively aggressive that it has taken a lot of love and patience to reassure them, but it has certainly been worth it. The love I get back from these cats far exceeds what one gets from a typical, spoilt moggy.
PS: If you are a cat reading this and you would like to know how to choose a human, I recommend The Silent Miaow: A Manual for Kittens, Strays, and Homeless Cats. No seriously, I have a copy here and I’ve read it several times over the last few decades. Now I can spot that “anticipatory purr” a mile off even if resistance is futile. ![]()
