What is "tag and ping"?

Two seemingly opposing viewpoints here: Neil Shearing, who’s had a “sneak peek” at the Tag And Ping course (that will be launched at the end of the week), says that “Tag and Ping Will Be Huge!

Eric Giguere, in Understanding “tag and ping” on the other hand, believes that, “As always, it’s good to take pronouncements like “the next generation of tag and ping” with a grain of salt.” He says that “Tag and ping is nothing more than blog and ping with tagged posts. Tagging, of course, is one of the more recent (but not that recent anymore) “Web 2.0″ crazes.” For instance using Technorati.

Who will be right? Hold on, while my crystal ball warms up!

Oh, I see a LOT of emails at the launch coming to your inbox in a few days. Yes, I think Neil is right. This will be a huge money earner.

Like Eric, I am very cautious about these better-than-sliced-bread offerings. However, having been on the advance notification list, I do know that creator, Sean Wu, has said that it is not what you think it is and that it does not rely on a site beginning with “T”.

Eric went on to say that, “you can bet that if enough people start “tagging and pinging” that Techorati, del.icio.us and other will be taking steps to weed out the cruft.” And, of course, he is right, however …

In this case, I think they already have done. Techorati counts sites linking to you into the equation. Digg requires user input to promote the best items. Del.icio.us and others hot or popular items rely on the number of times something is bookmarked by independent users.

Whilst you can tag and bookmark (and ping) as much crap as you want, those systems will ensure it always sinks to the bottom. The only way to get to the top: the high traffic earning spots, is on quality.

Apparently, there are five components to the Tag And Ping system, the 2nd of which is software and plugins to automate most of the tedious processes. I have already said today, there are distinct advantages to getting socially bookmarked and that it is a process that can be legitimately automated, so I am keeping an open mind, for now.
