Summer traffic blahs

Darren McLaughlin says, “I think that we’re nearing the low point for summer traffic. The weekends, in particular, have seemed relatively empty many days recently. But it’s gone from warm to hot in most parts of the world, so people are probably looking to find shelter in the comfort of their air conditioned rooms.”

Yesterday, my neighbour and I were discussing the fact that real summer is late here. We were joking that it probably wasn’t coming until October, but then this morning, the swallows were out ducking and diving - actually they were dive-bombing the garden, much to the amusement of my cats - which, at this latitude, denotes that summer is arriving in earnest. Too hot: time for them to move north.

In the absence of air-con, it will be time to black out the windows and even avoid opening them so that the oven-heated hot air does not enter. This will result in less interruptions from the screen - simply because it will be too damn hot to move - than in the merely warm weather.

Plenty of surfers must be doing the same or similar and, I agree that it is better to look at the year as a whole and not sweat these peaks and troughs. While you have less visitors, meaning less orders to fulfil or less support emails to answer, there are 1001 marketing tasks and new projects that you had to put off when those things distracted you.

What you should be doing in the summer lull is to prepare your offerings for the back-to-school and holiday seasons and take time to build all those new pages you keep promising yourself you will do.

But, don’t forget that this seasonal dip affects everyone. Now would be the right time to do any online shopping, because many sites reduce their prices in summer to invigorate their slower sales.
