Did you know that walnuts are rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids? Apparently, Spain is one of the biggest consumers of walnuts in the world - consuming around 40 million pounds of them per year - surpassed only by the United States and Germany.
“A study in the April 2004 issue of Circulation found that when walnuts were substituted for about one-third of the calories supplied by olives and other monounsaturated fats in the Mediterranean diet, total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol were reduced. Walnuts contain the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to be excellent for the heart.”
Having read that walnuts are one of the top foods for fighting cholesterol and, considering the bad cholesterol inducing foods that I ate over the Christmas season, I added a handful of chopped walnuts to salads that I served on the side of those “naughty things.” Maybe this wasn’t enough, but I am figuring that “every little helps” and that this is better than taking drugs or unnatural additives.
Besides, I think they taste more interesting this way and, it hardly needs any preparation - which are also some of the top considerations for singles.
