Reading an article - that mentioned courses - in local newspaper, La Opinión, I couldn’t help noticing a Google ad below it for Curso de Escaparatismo.
This word always makes me chuckle and is much like those wonderfully entertaining traps - or false friends - that will trip up an English speaker grappling with Spanish. Nope, it isn’t “learn to be an escapologist”, like Houdini, it’s a course in window dressing. An escaparate is a shop window, or display cabinet.
It’s right up there in fun value, none the less, along with embarazada, which means pregnant or constipado, which refers to having a stuffed up nose. Naturally.
Hablar español es divertido.
