Private Life of a Cat

Tuesday, January 30, 2007 | Permalink |
Alexander Hammid’s intimate study of a female cat and the birth and maturation of her five kittens. Produced by Alexander Hammid and Maya Deren, 1947.

No sex please, we’re pussycats

A delightful video I’ve been meaning to show you for some time is this one, Private Life of a Cat. It runs for a little over 20 minutes and shows from “courtship”, through kittens being born and growing up.

At the beginning of this black and white film, we are introduced to “He” and “She”. He then starts “kissing” her (licking her on the face), then we cut straight to the subtitles that say “In two months she starts looking for a place for the family”, leaving out any potentially pornographic details.

Whilst the birth itself is entirely graphic, this is, I think, a lovely film to watch if you haven’t seen kittens being born and, would also be suitable for showing children who want to know where kittens (or babies) come from.
