There’s been an interesting situation going on where The National Pork Board threatened to sue “The Lactivist” blog for using the slogan “the other white milk.” Story starts here. (Hat tip to Shoemoney for bringing it to my attention.)
The fact that in the end, the Pork Board have not only apologized, but also gone beyond in their efforts to right a wrong, are to be congratulated and that news does need to be spread, because “When big business sees the support that flows their way when they do the right thing, more businesses will realize the value of doing the right thing.”
Well, the same thing applies to small businesses too.
Moreover, this does, certainly prove the power of social media, which should not be written off as a bunch of jargon or a passing fad. Take the time to use social networking.
It’s also a reminder on the potential dangers of automation.
Whilst I don’t know if this is what they did, it certainly looks like the Pork Board may have “fired off a legal template with a few fill in the blank options”. Maybe even some automated program scanned the web and picked up something that merely came “CLOSE to the concept of the trademark”.
In this story about the The British Phonographic Industry’s wish to castrate anyone whom they think might be breaking the law, we learned, “how some organizations allegedly use bots to decide what might be infringement and report it.”
Again, I don’t know, but this may have been a real live example of exactly that happening. More important to remember is that, if you ever get a similar threat, as long as you really have done no wrong, do not be afraid to defend yourself vigorously. Never give in to bullies.
One thing I will mention is that although breastfeeding is hardly my thing - my cats were bottle fed, I’m afraid.
- I found myself impressed by the writing, which I discover is a hobby site by Jennifer Laycock of Search Engine Guide.
Jennifer Laycock is also the author of the real life guide to starting an online business that we recommended earlier, called Zero Dollars, a Little Talent and Thirty Days.
Both her sites are well worth visiting, but even if you aren’t into breastfeeding either, I think you can pick up as much, if not more, by example, about style and marketing from reading “between the lines” at The Lactivist.
