Women and men have different aesthetics

Wednesday, February 14, 2007 | Permalink |

Oh, MiGod, not pink again!

This made me smile:

“Companies spend millions each year on marketing research to figure out what women want and how to sell it to them. So, if you are a man and don’t have a million to spend for research - just make sketches and ask your girlfriend or wife for her first impression.

Don’t forget to ask the same question the next day - the answer might be the opposite:)”

To avoid the ensuing arguments, it may be better to go and read the rest of this post and the various studies it links to, such as that from the University of Glamorgan that found, “In almost every case women preferred those sites designed by women.” Or other data that “found that the most significant gender difference is yellow being preferred to orange by women and orange to yellow by men.”

I guess that makes me a woman then? :)

The preference for blue is also more marked in men. When I had a site with a blue and orange color scheme, funnily enough, more men commented positively on the design.

We can probably deduce from this too that Blogger’s design (just to pick on one example at random, off the top of my head) was designed “by men, for men.”

Anyway, if your site is aimed at one gender more than the other and, especially if that gender is the opposite to your own, this guidance will be invaluable.

Women and men have different aesthetics. If you know you are designing for women - what graphics would you use?
