“There were a hundred and fifty of us living in t’ shoebox in t’ middle o’ road.”, said (Terry Jones) the third Yorkshireman in this Monty Python sketch.
When I was younger, we all perfected Yorkshire accents to recite that line over and over and, it was as a commentary on how poor we were and the price of housing then.
Londonist point to this article about a flat for sale in Kingston with a 9ft x 9ft bedroom, with no windows, and a 13ft x 13ft reception room which includes the kitchen for £210,000 (€312,337 / $410,130).
Kingston was always more expensive, even way back in the Dark Ages, when my parents paid £6,000 for a three-bed semi in nearby Sunbury-on-Thames.
But hell, this really is going too far. It might not be in the middle of the road (or it might well be at just 100 metres from Kingston station), but that sure is a shoebox.
