Well, the headline almost says it all really, doesn’t it? Yes, I mentioned another guide to using StumbleUpon the other day and I do recommend using this site, because the traffic it can generate is well worth it.
Now Maki at DoshDosh has written a great post (with lots of screenshots) that shows you step-by-step, how to get started with StumbleUpon, how it works and how to fully utilize it’s features to gain targeted traffic.
Also, as I mentioned before, StumbleUpon is often compared to Digg, but I think StumbleUpon is MUCH more useful to the niche marketer.
Digg tends to be used by “geeky” types whereas, StumbleUpon attracts a whole cross section of the online community - regular folk with diverse interests, some of whom will be interested in your topic.
Initially, these visitors may not stay long, nor be very good at clicking on ads, but it is expanding your readership base and the traffic tends to be longer term. Also, that and all the tips on providing things that people like (and more of the same, once you discover what that is by using these tools), apply equally, wherever your traffic comes from.
But bearing StumbleUpon’s suggestions on content monetization, “A hard-sell offering little introduction or supporting information will seem out of place …”; that doesn’t say that genuinely informative sites that also happen to carry advertising or sell things are unwelcome.
Also because you need other people’s “vote” (those who thumbed up or tagged your page) to increase the amount of traffic that any particular page gets, this is excellent free market research intelligence.
Then, when you know what people like, as the previous guide highlighted, “An alternative is to consider sponsoring your site on StumbleUpon. Compared to the most obvious rival, Google Adwords, StumbleUpon traffic is sought and is the only page being served to the user at the time. It’s also incredibly cheap at $0.05 per visitor.”
