“For the last four years, The Feminist Peace Network has encouraged women around the world to participate in International Women’s Day. Once again, we invite you to join hands with women across the world in taking a stand for the empowerment of women and an end to the global pandemic of violence against women. It is time to say no to the domination of violence and yes to peaceful partnership.”
Think about this: it’s supposed to be the 21st Century, we’re a developed society and, humans are supposed to be intelligent beings. We should NOT need a special women’s (nor men’s) day, for that matter.
But you don’t need me to remind you that women can’t safely go out in the streets alone and in many cases, they are not even safe inside their own homes. In some countries, things have become much worse.
While even some women deny that a “glass ceiling” exists, women are still paid less than men in many places, even when they’re legally entitled to equality. In others they are denied access to the workplace.
For all the “civilization” we think we have, we have a lot of work to do on human rights, but there are some collectives, such as women, whose situation still needs to be underlined and needs additional work.
The the political and human rights theme of International Women’s Day, as designated by the United Nations, is still as necessary today as it was in the 1850’s and early 1900’s and, as human beings, I think we should be thoroughly ashamed of ourselves that it is still needed.
