Polar bears, sea ice and global warming are taboo subjects, at least in public, for some U.S. scientists attending meetings abroad, environmental groups and a top federal wildlife official said on Thursday.
Environmental activists called this scientific censorship, which they said was in line with the Bush administration’s history of muzzling dissent over global climate change.
Yup, I would call that censorship too, or at least an attempt to bury heads in the sand and avoid the (inconveniently unprofitable) truth.
And there’s the other major challenge to Europe’s efforts on controlling emissions. As I said earlier, I don’t expect the US and others to take any damn notice of what we do. This seems to indicate that the US would certainly like to avoid even discussing the issue.
The problem is that Europe’s emissions (as was mentioned in one of the articles I linked to earlier) only account for 15% of the world’s output. Making a 20% reduction in 15% is, a negligible 3% of the total.
Will anyone, let alone the planet, even notice it?
Living on a small island, this problem is more than apparent to me. In recent years, these islands have suffered various “weather phenomenon” that were never heard of before. We can - and should - do our part to control our own emissions, but even if we were to cut emissions locally by 100% (highly unlikely), that cannot be the whole answer.
Being in the Atlantic ocean, we are probably affected more by what happens in Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Don’t get me wrong, a 3% reduction is a hell of a lot better than a 3% rise. Mind you, I (and I’m sure many others) would be more than a bit pissed off if we make sacrifices to save 3%, which only serves to reduce the overall effect of rising emissions from elsewhere.
We all have to work together on this. We are of one planet. Period.
And before that can happen, we’ve got to address a huge number of issues; like fighting over borders or the ownership of assets. We also need to stop criminalizing immigration. Truly accept that all humans are equal. And we need to stop arguing over whether polar bears (or any other living thing) evolved or were put here by a God and look at the important point: those things are essential to the earth’s balance.
They should not be messed with, nor deliberately neglected.
