Cooking for one news

Thursday, May 10, 2007 | Permalink |

Whilst the May Meal Plan is still ongoing - tomorrow I shall publish the first cooking and taste test results - we have some other news:

My ugly mug has appeared on the front page of the Food Candy today, because the nice people over there decided to feature this blog. So, thank you to them and sorry if my photo scared any visitors! :)

Meanwhile, over at Group Recipes, I created a Cooking for One Group, the idea being that this would provide another way in which we can communicate, submit and swap our recipes, ideas and tips.

Then you certainly aren’t “in this alone.”

One of our members is currently in a bit of a pickle as she’s in the middle of having a kitchen fitted and only has a microwave functioning. She needs some easy, tasty microwave only recipes, quick please.

Also, while I’m doing a general news post, I need to convey my belated thanks to Slashfood for “Slashfooding” this blog back in March. Yes, you can use that as verb, because they have a similar - if, thankfully, not quite as drastic - effect on one’s traffic as Slashdot do with the “Slashdot effect” on geeky sites or that the “Palin Effect” has on travel locations when Michael Palin visits them.

Wikipedia say, “Palin’s travel programmes are responsible for a phenomenon termed the “Palin effect”: areas of the world that he has visited suddenly become popular tourist attractions.”

Mind you, I’m not sure I want to be a tourist attraction! :)

Sarah J. Gim in the post at Slashfood also points to some of their previous entries on cooking for one and says, “See, some people stress out when they have to put dinner on the table for a family of five, but I think the greater challenge is being able to cook (and eat) for one without having to resort to a large bowl of Special K.”

And I have to wholeheartedly agree with Sarah, because I’ve “been there, done that”, plenty of times with a bowl of cornflakes!

Alright, so I do still consider them perfectly suitable supper food. :)

But entertaining with five courses, cooking Christmas dinners for 12 or catering party buffets for 100 guests, all of which I’ve done, pale into insignificance compared to the veritable “juggling act” of trying to produce something not too boring, reasonably healthy, in a small space, in the least amount of time possible, on a ridiculously low budget, for one person … All without eating beans every night! :)

Also belated thanks to Fer Food for linking to one of my earlier posts.

There are, of course, many, many other items that I want to cover here; as well as my own notes and the ongoing series on the planning experiment, I have a list of between 50 and 100 clippings of news items, tips, recipes, as well as surveys and more to cover. But neither Rome, nor blogs can be built in one day. There is only one of me, life tends to get in the way occasionally and, I like to cook and eat in between!
