Police chief’s ‘Orwellian’ fears

Sunday, May 20, 2007 | Permalink |

From the BBC: A senior police officer has said he fears the spread of CCTV cameras is leading to “an Orwellian situation”. … “And I really don’t think that’s the kind of country that I want to live in.”

Is leading“, I think it’s there already. You don’t think that this is one of the reasons why 10% of the British population choose to live elsewhere and goodness knows how many others leave every day, do you?

Because, cop (pun intended) the small print under the photo with the article. “There are up to 4.2m CCTV cameras in Britain.”

In mid-2005 the UK was home to 60.2 million people.

According to my maths, 60.2m divided by 4.2m = 14.33.

That is one CCTV camera per 14 people. Whilst I have no idea (and I doubt anyone has), what an “optimum number” might be for crime prevention purposes, this ratio is excessive. It’s beyond intrusion, it’s unreasonable. It’s treating the entire population as criminals.
