Supposedly based on a true story:
Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity.
The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains.
Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked . . .
. . . as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer’s back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow.
The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists for suggestions.
You’re going to love this …
NASA responded with a one-line memo:
“Defrost the chicken.”
Here we are on the first of the month and I have not yet completed the report of how last month’s 7 meals shaped up after being defrosted and eaten for the second and subsequent times. Time, computer problems and “cooking for four” (cats, one of whom has been poorly) have all stood in the way.
Some of the meals worked out fine, some didn’t do so well and I will try to get that information finished soon, along with my thoughts on the overall plan.
Also, I’m going to be repeating the experiment again this month, because I have enough ingredients to repeat the Lentil and Spinach dish, as well as having 4 chicken legs left over to make into something and, staples like potatoes, rice and pasta to be used, so I’ll make a meal plan, shop for the remaining ingredients and cook the meals ahead as I did last month.
This means you can look forward to more “cooking disaster” reports, with unedited, gruesome photos again as the month progresses!
If there has been one recurrent problem, for me, it was trying to get into the habit of getting the next day’s meal out each day to defrost.
I’ve tried to do this when I was getting ready to eat that day’s dinner, but obviously, I’m no rocket scientist either and have become stupid or senile (or both), because I probably forgot more times than I remembered.
No doubt, I’ll get better with practice though.
Of course I can defrost portions in the microwave, but that uses energy and costs money, which is against my aims (needs) to keep this as economical as possible. Besides, I don’t really want my food “nuked” any more than it has to be and, if one didn’t have a microwave (is there anyone left who doesn’t?), then you can’t afford to forget this, or you’ll have no dinner ready!

it looks like it is true - I did a little Googling - apparently it was featured on that show Mythbusters (frozen v. regular). There’s also a Wikipedia entry!

Thanks Doug.
Yes, it looks like the chicken gun is real, but that someone firing frozen chickens instead of thawed chickens, is a myth. It’s still a pretty credible myth to me, mind you!
