Andy Wibbels says, “The grunt work is the dip - the stuff that not everybody is willing to do but those that stick to it and push through it and - as Seth recommends - lean into it come out the other side with more of everything.“
More years ago than I really care to count - 30 of them, if you must know - I took a few driving lessons and and passed my driving test. Yeah, I know everyone does it and it was a lot easier back then!
So, the first couple of times out, even my instructor was wondering what the heck I needed lessons for, then all of a suddenly, I couldn’t seem to get anything right.
It all came together in the end and, I did pass the test first time, but that temporary “falling apart” had puzzled me. I mean, previously, I’d been doing perfectly well. And, though I didn’t have a name for the concept, I did recognize that the phenomenon existed in other things too.
Immediately, when I saw the diagram, in Andy Wibbels’ review of Seth Godin’s new book, The Dip, I realized that this was the same phenomenon.
Andy says that an alternate title for this book should be The Slog.
You could probably also call it a consolidation stage, where you make proper sense of all that you’ve done before. If you apply that to online business, nine times out of ten you get the initial success by “trial and error” - I know I did - then you have to study what you did and figure out what it tells you about taking it to the next level. Oh yeah, I’m still slogging. LOL!
But, it’s obvious. There are a lot of people who give up well before they see any success at all, but I’ll bet there are just as many who give up in a dip. They would think their previous success was a fluke. They would think their current downer had outside influences to blame (we all do it). We all probably think anything, except “this is normal” and know exactly what to do about it.
Anyway, it’s a fascinating concept and one you may wish to look at in more detail, so read the rest of Andy’s review here.
