The internet is not web-shaped after all, apparently. Yes, I can understand why you might respond “So what?” or “Who cares?” to that, but while the boffins are still arguing and working out the details on this “discovery”, one comment from the conclusion of the article was interesting:
“One thing Zhang and Shavitt agree on is that money makes the World Wide Web go round. Both say that the biggest driver of the Internet’s rapid evolution now is the interplay between technology and the economy, as more and more new companies try to become the next Google, eBay or Facebook.”
Personally, I think I agree with Zhang in that “the topology is driven by the application need” (if I am translating that right as that it is driven by users demands on the infrastructure of the web), but even given that they are speaking in scientific tongues, I do think there is useful information to be picked up about the way that the web is connected and interconnected, because one must not forget that there are PEOPLE (readers, subscribers, customers) behind all those little colored pixel dots too.
