I know this is pedantic. But that’s most likely a female cat. It’s all to do with genes and the gene for ginger being sex linked. If that cat was a male, he’s have no ginger markings
The cat is almost definitely female. The genes for fur color are located on the x chromosome. Males only have one x chromosome, and thus only one copy of the gene, and thus cannot more than two fur colors -one where the gene is expressed and one where it isn’t-, barring environmental influences. However, in females, one x chromosome is deactivated in each cell, allowing for three possibilities, one where the first copy is expressed, one where the second copy is expressed, and one where neither is expressed.
That is not to say that it’s impossible to have a male calico, as there have been some known cases. However, it’s extremely rare for it to happen and the cats are usually sterile since they have an extra chromosome.
Now how’s that for pedantic?
Dear Anonymous,
You can be as pedantic as you want, however, I’d prefer that you at least used your name to do so.
Anyway, I agree with what you say, although there are exceptions and I have no idea if this is one of them. It is not my cat and I did not take the photo, nor did I write the title and description, so we have to rely on the person who did so and assume that they know the sex of the cat in question.
