Heather at Home Ec 101 suggests making your own oatmeal packets. Then, she says, “There’s no need to worry about measuring or digging for sugar and spices first thing in the morning.” “If you are cooking for one,” she adds, “add as listed to a baggie.” There’s no limit to the variations.
Since I try to keep my dairy intake to a minimum, I generally choose oatmeal over other cereals, because it’s made with water and, with quick cooking oats, it takes hardly any time and it’s really no trouble to make, but something I hadn’t ever thought of before is her additional suggestion, “if you are seriously pressed for time, create instant oatmeal packs by whirring the oatmeal in a blender until powdery. To cook just add boiling water and stir.”
Even old-fashioned oatmeal cooks in 2 minutes (1 minute, 30 seconds, 15 seconds, 15 seconds) in the microwave with just water and salt. I’ve never posted the recipe but if you search on Alanna’s peanut butter oatmeal on Kalyn’s Kitchen, you’ll find the technique.
And it’s whole grain — so better for you and your digestion.
Try it!!
I made homemade oatmeal packets for many years when my kids were young. They’re tastier, more nutritious, and definitely less expensive than the store bought alternatives.
