Having worked for the press, I know full well that publishers - under pressure to keep advertisers happy (and paying) - control what ends up as “news.” That doesn’t necessarily mean that everything that’s printed is a lie, but it does mean that the way it’s said, what’s left out and its political slant is NOT and cannot be either entirely open, nor impartial.
That is reality. (Even bloggers are governed by that in one way or another, either because blog hosts have rules we must follow, or if we run advertising, the ad network has rules and requirements.)
The only way that we can get a balanced view - from which to work out the truth for ourselves - is to make sure that we can get news and information from a variety of sources that have differing views.
Ask yourself if you really want to live in a world where one entity owns everything and, without the balance of opposing or alternate viewpoints, they could feed us propaganda, lies, allow dictators to remain in power, screw with your head and your liberties … No, I didn’t think so.
While Whack-a-Murdoch is just a game, media consolidation is a problem that requires urgent action. Right now, the Federal Communications Commission is rushing ahead with sweeping changes to media ownership rules that would allow Big Media to get even bigger. Bottom line? Our democracy can’t survive much longer on Murdoch’s junk media diet.
