Spanish elections are coming up in March for those who don’t know (or care!)
Colin Davies in Galicia points out, “As I understand it, the date for the start of official electioneering is a few weeks away. But you’d never know it. Hardly an hour passes without the Prime Minister or the Leader of the Opposition making a promise which tops that of the other an hour previously.”
I caught some of Noche Hache on Cuatro last night poking fun of this very “phenomenon” and I couldn’t help thinking that it reminded me of the days back in the 50s (well, 60s where I lived) when “a washing powder company (Persil, Omo or Daz - I just cannot remember which one) decided to offer a free plastic daffodil with each packet of washing powder to help promote sales.”
Oh the excitement! That is until you remembered it was just a useless plastic daffodil. Just an illusion. Alright, we know that now, but way back then, it was a novelty and people had temporarily suspended reality (not that people were easier to impress then, or maybe they were.) It would all be highly hilarious too, except that there will always be people who will rush out to get one.
Davies echoes my sentiments exactly in this respect, “I’d like to think the Spanish electorate is too sophisticated to be much affected by this Dutch auction approach to political manifestos but it worries me that people who understand the voters much better than me obviously don’t think so.”
