Not something one thinks of frequently … but just passing a quiz program on Spanish TV the other night, there was a question involving the unimaginatively translated, Cinta Americana (Duct Tape), or as it is, literally, American Tape.

(The question was about what space mission it was used on: Apollo 13. I can actually answer questions and get a few right in Spanish too, which I could never do in English, but that’s by the way …)

This I find less “brutal” than the Spanish phrase llave inglesa (literally, English key) that’s used for an adjustable spanner or a monkey wrench. Here’s hoping Spanish speakers know knew little of that other famous English tool, the destornillador de Birmingham (Birmingham screwdriver or hammer) :-)

(For those who haven’t heard it in a million years (do I want to admit remembering it? :)), here’s a video of Trini López singing If I Had a Hammer.)
