As with my list of essential software (some of which was pretty unessential really), this is hardly a long list of Firefox Add-ons. Maybe there are others that could do some repetitive task, but keeping it simpleish helps avoid crashes.
- Adsense Notifier. Some have suggested that it’s better not to have this addictive add-on. On the other hand, the occasional glance would serve to alert you if something was very wrong, which could save your account.
- Better Gmail. Enhances the NEW Gmail interface. See what it does.
- Copy All Urls. For when you still have 50 tabs open at the end of the day and want to take a note of them all in two clicks. Highly configurable. Can be used to make HTML coded link lists from your open tabs too.
- FoxClocks. See what time it is elsewhere in the world, all neatly listed along the status bar of your browser. Some of us just have the locations of family listed, so we know when we can call them. If you’re doing business all over the world, put in the major locations of your customers.
- Googlepedia. Loads the relevant Wikipedia article on the r/h side of the page alongside Google search results. There’s no way could I live without this amazing extension; it virtually halves my research time.
- gTranslate. Good for those odd words you want to check in context.
- IE View Lite. For those odd occasions when a site just won’t load right in Firefox and you really can’t avoid using it. Oh and for testing designs.
SessionSaver(now replaced by Session Manager). Bacon saver might be a better term. Imagine the scenario: you’ve already got umpteen tabs open while researching and collecting notes for an article or blog post. You visit a site (2:1 this will be in Tenerife), built entirely in (faulty) Flash and all other (obfuscated) links lead to massive PFD documents. Not surprisingly, your browser crashes. This recovers all the tabs and links you’d just spent half a day finding. Also maintains your sanity and tabs overnight.- StumbleUpon. Can be a massive traffic source, so it’s fair to participate too, though I am trying Shareaholic to replace this and other clutter.
- TrashMail.net. Occasionally handy spam avoidance tool.
- Web Developer. All sorts of toys for those of us who dabble in design.
Unsure: I have been using Fasterfox, mainly because I have such a bloody slow connection “uphill” here that any little tweak could be a help. I do wonder though if it actually contributed to getting blocked or no response at times and, I’m hoping that I will be getting a faster connection in future.
Google Toolbar for Firefox. I actually use the AutoFill, but few other features. Some say it can’t be uninstalled, which is rather worrying. Then there are the Autofill Forms and Formfiller extensions that might do the job instead.
An “honourable mention” has to go to Converter, which is something I do a lot (I’ll bet it doesn’t convert hectares to soccer pitches tho), that I’ve just found.
The only other “clutter” I added on the Bookmarks toolbar were the del.icio.us bookmarklet and the Localize Bookmarklet for mapping Flickr photos.
