We all have our weaknesses, I guess. Decidedly non-PC is the story of how Turkish Delight might have been invented by Bekir Effendi - a confectioner working in the Turkish Sultan’s palace in Constantinople during the late 18th century - to keep the Sultan’s wives and concubines quiet, as they couldn’t whine while they had their mouths full of the soft and chewy sweets.
The best I’ve ever tasted, so far, was not Turkish, but Greek: the traditional Loukoumia made on the island of Syros. Syros is renowned for its Loukoumia, Epikouria remind us and I indeed seized the opportunity to buy large boxes of this delightful ambrosia when I stayed on that island, way back in 1985.
So impressive was it, I can still salivate thinking about it 23 years later!
This week, the man selling Persian goodies, Greek pastries and superb Turkish Delight (from Turkey - and it was a pistachio filled, coconut coated variety like this one) wasn’t at the Wednesday market in New Milton, which pretty much ruined my week, as there are few other excitements around here.
See, maybe the Sultan’s confectioner was right about the way to keep "frustrated women" happy. Sod your Viagra, gimme the sweeties!
And so yesterday, I certainly was pleased to find a place to buy Pistachio Turkish Delight online. In fact, they have 22 varieties of Turkish Delight …
